Education

Our Education specialists offer practical solutions to a wide range of education providers and local authorities, including community and mainstream, foundation, free schools, special schools and faith schools, pupil referral units, academies and multi academy trusts, colleges, university technical colleges and universities.

What we can do for you

With a wealth of experience working with a variety of education providers, our team of specialists really understand the different issues clients face. This experience allows them to provide commercially sound advice to clients in this fast changing sector.

Converting to an academy

We have significant experience of advising all types of schools looking to convert to academy status or to form a multi academy trust.

We can help in many ways: we can submit the application to convert to an academy and/or the application for a grant, help you set up and form a company, give advice about the academy's responsibilities as a company and the responsibilities of its directors, negotiate and draft the funding agreement and any commercial agreements, advise of any planning, development or construction issues and we can liaise directly with the Department for Education and give advice about employees and their transfer of employment.

Once academy status has been achieved we can support you in ensuring compliance with your everyday legal obligations.

Colleges and universities

Our lawyers act for universities and colleges and other similar institutions on a range of matters. Our expertise includes advising on real estate and asset management issues and the acquisition and disposal of leasehold and freehold properties.

The team also advise on any related charity issues and on the formation of university technical colleges.

University Technical Colleges

We have the skills and experience to assist existing university technical colleges or, as one of the few law firms to have already assisted in the formation of a new university technical college, we are well placed to advise from the very start.

We work closely with not only the universities or colleges, but also local authorities, the Department for Education and the Baker Dearing Educational Trust, on the formation and operation of a university technical college.

Free Schools

There are many things to consider in the early stages of a free school and our specialist team can guide you through the process from start to finish and give you some helpful tips along the way.

We have built good relationships with the New Schools Network, the Department for Education and Regional Schools Commissioners and can work alongside you, with them, to achieve the free school status. Once free school status has been achieved we can support you in ensuring compliance with your everyday legal obligations.

Independent Schools

We act for numerous independent schools, including one of the largest group of independent schools in the UK. The extensive experience our lawyers have of this sector and the understanding we have gained of the specific operational needs of independent schools, means we offer prompt and effective legal solutions.

State Schools

Many maintained schools and academies are moving away from using their local authority’s in-house legal team to ensure that the advice they receive is not conflicted, is impartial and focuses solely on their school’s interests.

Local Authorities

We work both directly for local authority departments and also with in-house legal teams. We have experience across a range of education matters and can assist in a number of ways, including providing advisory support, drafting responses and if necessary, representation at hearings.
